As part of the Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival, a free to talk about the WA Women’s Hall of Fame ‘Roll of Honour’ and two of the inspiring women who have been acknowledged posthumously.
Guest Speakers
Dr Leanda Mason, renowned expert on trapdoor spiders and other arachnids, shared the journey of 2025 Inductee Professor Barbara York Main OAM (1929 –2019), who was the first woman to earn a PhD in UWA’s Zoology Department later becoming a world-renowned expert in the genus Mygalomorph (trapdoor spiders) and known internationally as The Spider Lady. Robyn Sermon, CEO the Royal Agricultural Society of WA, spoke about 2026 Inductee, the inspiring Shirley Thorn AM JP (1935 – 2025) who made a significant and unheralded contribution to grain industry development and agricultural community life in Western Australia over seven decades, including as Councillor with the RASWA for 18-years. Free talk at the City of Perth Library, acknowledging two of our 2024 Roll of Honour Inductees both celebrated Western Australian writers who have described this state as it was in the early twentieth century – Mollie Skinner (nurse and writer) and Katherine Susannah Pritchard (writer and political activist).
